The BA (Hons) Dance and Creative Performance degree offers you the opportunity to learn about dance from an all-round perspective. The course will prepare you to enter the world of work and/or further study and aims to produce graduates who are confident in their ability to work in a globally changing world and who are prepared to make a significant contribution to local and wider dance and arts communities.

Through your dance studies, you will become versatile and critically reflective in thinking and practice, engage in different dance genres, and become skilled in the use of new technologies relating to dance. By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge and experience to enter the performing arts industry or to use transferable skills to enter a wide range of careers. Our optional module pathways enable you to broaden and develop a range of skills which will be of benefit in the performing arts industry.

About this course

The BA (Hons) Dance and Creative Performance degree develops your studio practice through studying a range of techniques and repertoire (including contemporary, ballet and jazz), and learn skills in choreography for making dances for the studio, stage, specific sites, and film. You will expand your knowledge of these practices through understanding their historical and cultural context, and through critical reflection. You will develop industry skills and explore the role of new technology in the creation and performance of a range of dance works. In addition, you will discover how the scientific aspects of dance, such as fitness components and performance psychology inform and enhance your dance practice.

This module’s aim is to develop students as performers through weekly practical study of dances from the repertoire. Students will be expected to attain and maintain a suitable level of fitness to underpin their practical dance work, as well as to explore their potential as interpretive and performing artists. Practical classes will be supported by guided reading and viewing of dance works. This module will also develop students' knowledge of work ethic relevant to working in a dance studio as developing artists.

This module introduces students to a range of dance styles, techniques (Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz where applicable) and professional ethics of working in a dance studio safely and effectively. This module has one main aim, namely to develop students as physical dancers where they will learn universal dance technique principals and how to apply these to their own physique. Students will be expected to attain and maintain a suitable level of fitness (cardiovascular fitness and core strength) and work ethic to underpin their practical dance work. Students will support their practical classes with independent study which includes rehearsals, viewing of professional work, guided readings and formative assessment tasks.

This module aims to develop students’ understanding of improvisation and choreographic processes leading to the creation, development, and performance of dance pieces. The module references current dance-making trends and aims to extend knowledge and understanding of the ways in which choreography is initiated and developed. Students will explore and develop the creative process using improvisation, compositional devices, technology, and other art forms. Practical work will be underpinned by theoretical studies and students will enrich their understanding through a range of reading, writing, film tasks and reflections on creative processes undertaken in classes. This module will also develop students' working practices as individuals and within collectives.

This module will introduce students to performance analysis. Performance analysis is key to the study of any of the performing arts disciplines. Focusing on the ways in which we ‘read’ performance, the module will help you develop a range of skills in order to facilitate your ability to critically evaluate and articulate your understanding of the performances you watch.

Costume is a fundamental element of performance: it communicates place, time and character. During this module you will design, develop and create a costume design based on a character from a pre-existing source or text. You will develop ideas through the use of a sketch book and learn the fundamentals of costume making, using materials, techniques and processes to produce a costume appropriate for production use.

This module on devising will allow you to explore a range of approaches to creative performance making; you will explore ways to find a starting point, generate performance material, and compose performances. You will learn important skills such as how to collaborate effectively and how to reflect on your work in order to develop it further. The emphasis will be on learning through doing and the module will allow you to work collaboratively to create your own work.

This module develops your understanding of the history of the musical, and explores how that history gets told. We will think about who gets to be part of the story and ask if the story needs changing. We consider the contributions of many groups who have developed the form we know today: we explore the work of key Black, Jewish, women and LGBTQ+ creative practitioners whose work has sometimes been overlooked in histories of the form. We interpret the cultural and social contexts that shape these processes, through practical workshops and seminar discussions. We will explore how the history of the musical might shape its future. The module will improve your knowledge of repertoire (songs and practices) and musicals.

This module focuses on developing your understanding of policies and procedures such as the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion in teaching, safeguarding legislation and keeping children and young people safe in education . The module will help you to understand child development so that you can promote positive behaviour or manage challenging and inappropriate behaviour in the classroom. Lesson planning and micro-teaching activities will give you the opportunity to gain some classroom experience through micro-teaching exercises. Reflective tasks and professional discussions will help you to explore how you can develop creativity within your teaching practice and subject discipline.
