Module summaries

Experimental Sound
An understanding of the sound-making processes is enhanced when linked to experience of the creative process. This module gives you the freedom to explore and develop your own ideas and abilities in a variety of ways within the context of sound. You will produce a portfolio that shows technical accomplishment, but also confident expression and creative risk-taking.

Plus one options from:

Live Sound Practice
Ideal if you are looking for a career in live sound, this module runs in 'long thin' mode, whereby you make recordings of live events throughout the academic year and submit them for assessment at the end. This optional module has limited places, and you must meet certain entry criteria and apply to study it.

Live Sound and Recording Techniques
This module introduces you to the techniques and technology currently used in the live concert sound reinforcement and theatre/installation sound design industries. You study elements that include: An Overview of clothe Live Production Industry, Practical Acoustics, Industry Structure and Practices, Live Sound and Recording Skills, Advanced System Design, Maintenance / Basic Electronics and Health and Safety. The module combines hands-on and theoretical tuition to give you a thorough grounding in a growing and increasingly technology-led section of the music industry.

and three options from:

Audio Post-Production
This module gives you practical experience and detailed knowledge of the technology and practices used in the audio post-production industry. You will explore and develop creative techniques to produce, record and mix sound for a range of post-production applications.

Music and Media in Industry
Here we introduce you to the legal and practical knowledge you will need to plan, set up and run a company in the media/music industry - where there are more and more smaller specialised companies, short-term contracts and freelance project-based employment opportunities. You will study the principles of company registration, tax and National Insurance, and learn techniques for business planning, raising capital and marketing. This module will also tackle topics peculiar to the industry, including copyright law, building and planning regulations, and contractual obligations.

Music Education Workshop
You will work in a group with music students and devise a music-related project to take place in local schools. This module is an ideal first step into music teaching or music technology, and involves devising and assessing the effectiveness of a range of practical learning activities. It also covers the framework for working in schools, and the careers available to students with specialist music and technology skills.

Project Music Technology
This module gives you the opportunity to devise and execute an ambitious personal, self-managed project, in which you apply, integrate and demonstrate the skills and knowledge you will have gained from this course. You will produce a practical artefact, supported by written work, that shows a strong bias towards audio production that reflects your personal interests and professional abilities. The project is normally your individual effort, and will form a substantial part of your leaving portfolio or showcase, but we allow collaborative projects under certain circumstances.

This is your chance to embrace and develop a wide range of skills required for successful large-scale projects, such as planning, self, time and resource-management, communication, creative and imaginative exploration, problem-solving, technical facility and production techniques, production values and quality control.
