About this course
The degree aims to develop your awareness of the work of agencies at a local level and in areas such as criminal justice. It stresses the importance of effective and cooperative approaches to improving welfare outcomes, particularly at a time of radical changes to public services and welfare reforms.
Students who successfully complete the BA (Hons) Social Policy, Health and Housing degree will have developed a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of social policy, health and housing. It's a good avenue for entry into the workplace, career progression and a good means of exploring different career possibilities. Past students have developed careers within local authorities, social welfare agencies, housing associations and healthcare organisations.
You must have a minimum of 240 credits that have been achieved from the foundation degree in Social Policy at University Centre St Helens or achieved at a comparable college or university that has modules that correlate with the course.

What will I study?
Year 1 (Level 6)
You will link theory and practice through undertaking a 60-hour placement and project. You will also have the opportunity to develop your independent study and learning skills through an extended piece of academic work involving substantial research, planning and analysis.
You will explore how to analyse and evaluate the application of social policy in relation to criminal justice. Problems and issues in the wider context of 'community', and with reference to concepts such as social capital and multiculturalism will also be explored. Additionally, you will link the study of social policy issues with an understanding of models of politics and theories of democracy, and with an examination of practical ethics and contemporary issues.
Year 1 (Level 6)
Work Placement (20 credits)
The work placement will allow you to link theory and practice by means of a 60-hour placement and project.
Dissertation/Research Project (40 credits)
Dissertation/research project provides you with independent learning skills and involves an extended piece of academic work involving substantial research, planning and analysis.
Social Policy and Criminal Justice (20 credits)
Social policy and criminal justice describes, analyses and evaluates the application of social policy in relation to criminal justice.
Contemporary Community Issues (20 credits)
Contemporary community issues explores a range of social problems and issues in the wider context of 'community', and with reference to concepts such as social capital and multiculturalism.
Politics, Ethics and Democracy (20 credits)
Politics, ethics and democracy links the study of social policy issues with an understanding of models of politics and theories of democracy, with an examination of normative concepts and contemporary ethical issues.
