This course will introduce participants to exercise that has been designed to help improve strength and balance in older adults. Options will be given so that you can work at a level you feel comfortable with.

We include working on strengthening muscles to aid bone health and postural stability as well as various balance challenging activities. Some of the exercises will be carried out seated and others standing on the spot or moving about the room.

About this course

Give at least three reasons why balance tends to worsen as we age.
Describe how balance can be improved by exercise.
Feel confident doing a variety of exercises that can help with keeping mobile and steady when practised regularly.

Common causes of worsening balance in older adults.
How exercise can help
Practising balance and strength exercises at a level appropriate for you.

Demonstrations and explanations by the tutor and practical work. As the term progresses you will be encouraged to do additional practice at home. Students need clothing they feel comfortable moving in and non-slip shoes with flexible soles. Please avoid eating one and a half hours prior to exercising.
