Course summary:
ECDL Essentials is a level 1 qualification and has been designed to give users a basic introduction to computing with relevant skills in using the basic tools required for an IT user today.
Course content:
IT Security for Users
IT User Fundamentals
Web Browsing and Communication
Candidates who complete this qualification will obtain an ECDL Essentials certificate which will also be a level 1 award qualification.
Course structure:
It takes normally 65 hours to complete Level 1. Normally a student could expect to complete a Level 1 unit in about 8 sessions. By following the carefully prepared learning materials you can work at a pace that suits you; and that has been agreed at enrolment.
Assessment procedure:
This course will equip learners with the basic range of transferable skills necessary to meet the demands of the modern workplace. Evidence of competence in the course is assessed by the completion of marked sample assignments as well as an on-line mock exam & an exam to end each unit.
Qualifications achieved:
Certificate for IT Users (ECDL Part 1)
The BCS Certificates for IT Users Level 1 is a professionally recognised qualification that provides proof of competency in computer skills.
Progression opportunities:
Once successfully completed you will move onto BCS Level 2, which will complete the full ECDL course.

Many part-time students at South Tyneside College do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, depending on the course and the number of hours a week you study, you may be eligible for an Adult Learners†Grant.
