Through analysis of their music, a history of the Fab Four and a cultural history of the 1960s we will explore how John, Paul, George & Ringo came to define the Twentieth century’s most turbulent decade. From Love Me Do to the Abbey Road medley, we will explore the Beatles’ music making in the context of cultural, technical and personal developments. We will explore their influences and their impact on their contemporaries.

Course programme

- The music of the Beatles including A Hard Day’s Night, Revolver and Abbey Road.
- A cultural history of the 1960s against the wider backdrop of the political and social landscape.
- A history of the Beatles and its members – their lives over the course of the decade from their forming as a group to their break up.

You will be taught with workshops, short lectures, practical exercises, tutorials and handouts. The course will use a variety of materials including audio recordings and film footage.
