Biochemistry examines the structure and function of living organisms at the molecular level. It is an exciting and rapidly developing subject and the primary investigative science within biology and medicine.

Our BSc Biochemistry (Study Abroad) includes core modules in Biochemistry and Chemistry combined with a solid background in related fields. Lancaster University is ranked fifth in the UK for Biological Sciences and ninth for Chemistry by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.

This three-year degree is ideal if you wish to experience overseas study as part of your Biochemistry degree. Overseas study can broaden your horizon, build your confidence, offer a different perspective on your subject, and can make you stand out from the crowd in a competitive job market.

In the first year, you will study core modules such as Protein Biochemistry, Cell Structure and Function, and Genetics – all designed to give you a good overview of key modern biochemical concepts. You can enjoy the flexibility of choosing an additional four modules from any of the Bioscience subjects on offer at Lancaster University.

You will spend your second year at a university in Australasia, Canada or the USA. You will study modules which have been approved by Lancaster University to ensure that you are prepared for the modules you will take when you return to Lancaster for your final year.

You will have the flexibility to tailor your third year to your biochemical interests and can select from a diverse range of subjects including Cell Signalling, Cancer, Biology of Ageing, and Neurobiology. During your degree, you’ll conduct your own laboratory-based project where you’ll benefit from the research experience of our internationally renowned academic staff.

About this course

After studying Biochemistry at Lancaster University, you can look forward to a promising career in areas such as academic, industrial and medical research, pharmaceuticals, the food industry and forensic science. 95% of Lancaster’s BSc Biochemistry (Study Abroad) graduates are in work or further study six months after graduating, 60% of those in employment are in professional or managerial positions (Unistats 2018). Alternatively, the course is an ideal base from which to continue on to postgraduate study.

The transferable skills and analytical training you will gain during your Biochemistry degree will allow you to enter science or diverse fields such as management, marketing and finance. You will gain practical skills such as laboratory competence and experimental design; numerical skills such as statistical analysis and data recording and presentation; and interpersonal skills such as team working, communication and negotiation.

An employability skills module will help you to manage your professional development and prepare for the job market. Your independent, laboratory-based research project will give you valuable research experience using the latest technology. Plus the experience of different cultures and enhanced international perspectives gained on your study abroad year will contribute to your employability.

A Level AAA

Required Subjects A level Chemistry and one other science subject from Biology, Mathematics or Physics

GCSE Mathematics grade B or 5, English Language grade C or 4

IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component.

Lancaster University offers a range of programmes, some of which follow a structured study programme, and others which offer the chance for you to devise a more flexible programme. We divide academic study into two sections - Part 1 (Year 1) and Part 2 (Year 2, 3 and sometimes 4). For most programmes Part 1 requires you to study 120 credits spread over at least three modules which, depending upon your programme, will be drawn from one, two or three different academic subjects. A higher degree of specialisation then develops in subsequent years.
