Is this course right for me?

This course is designed to develop your skills and knowledge for a career in the science sector. You will develop practical skills and understanding of key concepts across a range of biological topics.

What will I be learning?

The first year you will study modules in laboratory technique, cell biology, genes and genetics, microbiology, and plants and the environment. You will also undertake work-based learning, which will be assessed by observation, employer feedback and the completion of a diary to record your experiences and achievements. The modules are designed to allow you to develop and integrate skills and knowledge from all you areas of study as you progress through the year. Your first year study will be supported by tutorials and short courses, covering study skills, laboratory management and mathematics for scientists.
In the second year in additional to work-based learning, you will take compulsory modules in further cell biology, biodiversity and sustainability, population genetics, evolution and taxonomy and a student project of your choice. You can also choose two optional modules that interest you which you wish to specialise in. These are likely to be two from ecology, organ-environment interactions and agroecosystems or alternatively, infection and immunity and human physiology.

How will I learn?

Learning is through lectures, seminars, practical sessions, work placement and tutorials. Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examinations. The course work will include experimental reports and longer projects involving research and practical work. Successful completion of the work placement unit is a key part of the course.

What else might I want to know?

Work-based learning is an essential part of the course and you will be expected to attend a suitable place of work for at least one day a week throughout your time at the College.
The Foundation Degree takes two years, but it can be followed on a part-time basis over four years.

What can I do afterwards?

The Foundation Degree is a qualification in its own right and aims to prepare you for work in the science sector, so it could help you gain employment. You could also complete further university study to achieve a BSc honours degree. This foundation degree is designed to link with several honours degree pathways at the University of Plymouth, including Human Health and Nutrition and Environmental Science. It may also allow access to the BSc (Hons) Applied Bioscience.
There is a national skills shortage in Biosciences, Biotechnology and related specialisms. Graduates from the Foundation Degree, or a related Honours Degree, might seek employment in these areas.
