Course summary
This is a specialist course designed to equip you with the intellectual and technical resources you will need in the demanding world of film and media composition. It is geared towards serious, professionally-minded students who recognise the need for the best academic and vocational training.

The course provides ample opportunity to utilise these skills in a practical context by composing music for a wide range of genres, including:
silent film
science fiction
animation
film and video game trailers
action/ adventure
horror
'epic' drama
fantasy
During the course, you will develop your skills as orchestrators by composing for a variety of instrumental ensembles, gain experience and knowledge of 'good practice' in the art of score and part-preparation (for recording sessions), and undertake further studies in film-music analysis; complete scores by composers such as John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Miklos Rozsa, Maurice Jarre, and John Powell are just some of the subjects of investigation.

Entry requirements
You will need:
112-128 UCAS tariff points (or equivalent) normally in a minimum of two subject areas including Music or a related subject area
GCSE English and Maths (grade A*-C) or Level 2 equivalent.
International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).

Course overview
The aims of professional film and media composition are at the heart of this degree. You will write according to specific briefs involving carefully chosen film clips. Your studies are supported by a complete training in orchestration and arranging and by stimulating creative exercises designed to enhance your command at every stage of the creative process. The study of music history will enhance your ability to compose pastiche of any style and period, and provide you with the essential skills for reacting to, and empathising with, the ideas and needs of film directors and producers.
