This course will focus on the first decade of Dylan’s career, with a particular emphasis on cultural and political aspects of the 1960s as they relate to his music. We will examine the context of the American Folk Music Revival and Dylan’s place in it, and the significance of his changes of direction.

Course programme

- An introduction to the American folk revival and Dylan’s early influences
- A cultural history of the 1960s: Dylan’s impact on his contemporaries; his place in the Civil Right Movement
- The wider context of Dylan’s song writing and its development through his early career.

You will be taught with short lectures, discussion, listening, tutorials and handouts. The course will use a variety of materials including audio recordings and film footage.
