Brass instruments are incredibly versatile in their use across history and around the world. We’ll explore music from a variety of cultures including music of the African diaspora (Ghanain high-life, South African Township Jazz, Salsa, Ska/Reggae) as well Western classical music (early music as well as more modern styles). Our approach will encompass ensemble playing and reading notation, as well as improvisation.

Please email the music department () when you enrol to inform us which instrument you play.

About this course

- Have an awareness of good breathing technique and posture, leading to a relaxed approach to playing, free of muscular tension
- Have improved reading of musical notation
- Have a broader awareness of musical styles and how to approach them
- Make creative choices as part of a group improvisation.

You will need to bring your own instrument(s). You must play an instrument from the brass family, such as trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn, french horn, tenor/baritone horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba.

- Written arrangements tailored to the participants
- Healthy breathing technique
- Adapting playing approaches and technique to different styles of music
- Group improvisation.

- You will be taught in the context of a large group/ensemble; there may be some small group ‘splitting off’ from the main session as well. - Practicing material and techniques outside of the class is encouraged.
