Drum Pass: Drum Kit beginner to advanced

  • I started out thinking I would have no rhythm and that I'd be useless at drumming. But even from the very first lesson, I could tell that my teacher really knew his stuff and had such an infectious passion and enthusiasm for the drums that I was going to be hooked on drumming. The drums are so much fun to play and I love the challenge of coming up against new rhythms and coordinations. Recently I even invested in an electronic drum kit to continue my practice at home and I went to a band workshop to experience my first time playing with other musicians live in the studio. Next step is to gather the confidence to get on stage and perform in front of an audience! If you had told me 2 years ago that I would be drumming on stage with a band I would have laughed... But it's just testimony to the calm, enthusiastic, patient, encouraging nature of the guys at Elephant Drums and the expert way the tuition is delivered that has got me so quickly to where I am now. Still loving it!

Course programme

The Drum Pass gives the drum student a one-to-one course of drumming tuition.

It is a flexible personalised course of drumming lessons at professional drum studios in London.

Beginners can expect to make rapid progress in the first few weeks with learning the essential coordination and technical skills required to become a drummer. More advanced students can expect to improve upon their existing knowledge and iron out any habits they may have developed in the past.

The course will then cover a broad range of topics giving the student a thorough understanding of contemporary drumming, with the empahsis on practical musical application and performance.

Learners can choose whether or not the want to work towards formal drumming qualifications (it is not obligatory for those that wish to learn drums without doing exams).

Topics covered include:

  • Playing grooves and fills in all musical genres
  • Stylistic interpretation
  • Aural perception
  • Performance techniques
  • Composition and improvisation
  • Thought processes and internalisation
  • Drumming within the context of a band
  • Coordination, independence and inter-dependence
  • Time feel (internal clock) development
  • Drum kit maintenance
  • Dynamics and expression
  • Music production for drummers
  • Reading and writing drum music (music theory)

The course is ideal for beginners with no previous drumming experience or for more advanced players who wish to develop their skills. There are no upper age limits and enrollment is continuous throughout the year. Each learner receives one hour per week of personalised one-to-one drumming tuition, on a flexible timetable. Courses are tailored to suit the needs of each individual to ensure they get the most from their drum lessons.
