British and French gangster cinema from the 1930s to the 1970s. We will consider the ways in which each of these national cinemas has approached the genre, marking it as both imitation of, and homage to, the classical American gangster film while simultaneously locating the genre within the cinematic traditions of British and French cinema to create unique versions of the genre.

Screenings of extracts from films, talks by the tutor, reading materials, small and large group discussions.
