Course programme

International history is about the events, ideas and individuals which have shaped the modern world. It is about critical situations that brought about the ends and beginnings of eras ie: the Russian revolution, the First and Second World Wars, the dropping of the first nuclear bomb and international crises such as the Middle East and the Cold War. It examines the ideas behind international events, ideas such as de-colonisation and nuclear disarmament. It is about the individuals such as Churchill, Kennedy and Gorbachov who shaped global events and it is about ordinary people and the way in which they experienced world history. This scheme is focused on 20 th century international history, and places this in the context of an understanding of the international political world. International History is also about why certain events are more important than others, who decides which events are considered important, and how historical events are interpreted to give meaning to our modern world.
