Course programme

Almost half of the world's population live on less than $2 a day. How has this happened, and why? The most powerful states are also the richest; the weakest states are the poorest. How does the rich, powerful north relate to the south? Has the north helped development or harmed it? Is poverty the result of poor government and are weak states able to survive? What is the role of women in the Third World ? How do we think about security in the poorest nations on earth, when risks are so different to those in the richer parts? How has globalisation changed the Third World and what is its role in the contemporary international system? What, indeed, is ‘the Third World'?

These and other questions form the core debates in this International Politics & the Third World degree scheme which explores the politics of the so-called Third World and its relationship with the so-called First World in the era of globalisation.

Degree Structure

Year One

During their first year (known as ‘Part One') students are introduced to the study of International Politics and to some of the major areas of the discipline.

Single Honours students are encouraged to take all six of these modules, but it is possible to take some modules from other Departments if you prefer.

Years Two and Three (Part 2)

During their either their second or third year students are required to take the core module for their degree scheme.

In their final year students are required to complete a 12,000-word dissertation on a topic related to their chosen degree scheme.

In addition to these core elements, Single Honours students take up to nine optional modules from the Department of International Politics over years two and three. The range of options on offer changes from year to year.
