Course programme

Overview

The course will include the understanding and use of 35mm and digital SLR cameras, along with studio lightning, which is all aimed at creative portfolio development.

You will also experience how moving images work, giving you further transferable skills in a fast changing industry.

Visual recording in art and design

This unit aims to extend learners' ability to select and visually record from a range of sources in order to communicate information to different audiences, using appropriate presentation methods and for a range of specific purposes.

Materials, techniques and processes in art and design

The aim of this unit is to develop learners' skills and understanding in working safely and creatively with the materials, techniques and processes associated with other pathways.

Ideas and concepts in art and design

This unit aims to broaden and deepen learner skills, knowledge and understanding of creative thinking, across contemporary and historical art and design, in order to inform their own practice.

Communication through art and design

This unit aims to develop the breadth and depth of learners' knowledge, and an understanding of skills in communication through art and design.

Contextual influences in art and design

The aim of this unit is to develop learners' skills and knowledge of how historical and cultural influences inform art, craft and design.

Application, exploration and realisation in art and design

In this unit learners will develop and extend their specialist subject understanding and skills, realising their creative potential through personal research, experimentation and communication of ideas using specialist art and design media.

Personal and professional development

This unit involves getting a portfolio of work ready for Higher Education or the work place. This unit covers UCAS when applying to HE.

Computers in art and design

This unit will enable learners to develop skills and understanding of the use of computers in art and design. They will research existing applications of computer use, as well as develop creative responses through their own study and production of computer-based outcomes.

Photographic media, techniques and technology

The aim of this unit is to develop learners' skills, knowledge and understanding of the ways in which different photographic media, techniques and technology contribute to the creation of imaginative photographs.

Studio photography

The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain skills, knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of studio-based photography.

Photography location techniques

The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to the equipment and techniques needed to photograph on location.

Lens-based image making

This unit introduces learners to skills in and knowledge of a variety of lens-based technologies and processes for image making.

Image manipulation using computer applications

This unit aims to develop learners' skills and understanding in technical and creative image manipulation, using a variety of processes and for different purposes.

Darkroom practice

The aim of this unit is to develop learners' skills using the equipment, materials and techniques of traditional wet-based darkroom practices.

Typographic and layout design

Using editorial software, students gain new skills in producing a front cover for a magazine, plus a double page spread.

Digital storytelling

Using moving image software and cameras, plan, produce and present a music video to DVD and the web.

Information graphics

Learners will investigate the design contexts of a brief such as target audience, the product, the message and the media in which it will be presented.


Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of five GCSEs at grade A*-C, including English language and an art, design or craft subject, and maths at grade D or above, or
  • A level 2 art and design qualification at overall merit grade, English at level 2 and maths at level 1.

You will also need a strong portfolio or art and design work, which shows your enthusiasm for the subject.
