WHAT WILL I LEARN?

From the outset we will develop your technical skills and teach you to understand what it is to be a professional photographer. We’ll introduce you to wider thematic questions so you’re better equipped to think as an informed image-maker. As the course progresses we invite the international photography community into our classroom, enabling you to engage directly with the industry from our safely-mentored environment.

In the final year you’ll have the knowledge, confidence and expertise to be publishing your own work on an international platform and leveraging those forces that are changing the face of the photographic world.

Year 1

• Developing and Understanding Photographic Practice;
• Creative Digital Practice;
• Working with Light;
• Personal Professional Development: Photography;
• Add+vantage module selected from University-wide scheme.

Year 2

• Placing Photographic Practice in Context;
• Picturing the Body or Experimental Narratives;
• Digital Media;
• Professional Experience;
• Rethink, React, Respond;
• Add+vantage module selected from University-wide scheme;
• Optional placement or study abroad year.

Final year

• Working with Photography in Context;
• Photography and Narrative;
• Professional Photographic Practice;
• Professional Practice Portfolio: Photography;
• Add+vantage module selected from University-wide scheme.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of practical workshops and lectures, with associated seminars and small group skills sessions. In addition, your personal tutor, who will be a member of the photography team, will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

Below is an estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed:

• Coursework, tests, essays 15%;
• Practical or project work 70%;
• Presentations, posters etc 15%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 15 contact hours of teaching comprising:

• personal/small group teaching – 1 hour of tutorials (or project supervision) each week;
• medium group teaching – 10 hours of workshops or seminars each week;
• large group teaching – 4 hours of lectures each week.
