Is it for me?
This course is designed to equip you with underpinning knowledge and practical skills required for employment in the care and early years sector.
What do I need?
Two GCSE's at grade C (one which should be English) and a good mix of grade D GCSEs or a GNVQ Foundation in Health and Social Care (Merit). Alternatively, mature students with relevant experience will be welcomed.
Please note that acceptance on to some courses may be subject to a satisfactory police clearance. Further guidance will be given by the course team at interview or induction.
A criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to studying on this course, a number of factors will be taken in to consideration.
What will I study?
You will study three core units linked to Care Practice, Lifespan Development, and Values and Interpersonal Skills.
Additional units provide breadth across a range of units including Physical Care, Communication Skills, The Caring Environment and Client Support etc. Work experience is an essential component of the programme and is fully integrated with college activity. You will also study Functional Skills qualifications at an appropriate level to your needs, in Literacy, Numeracy and IT
Where will I study?
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments include group/individual presentations, case studies, assignments, projects and work-based activities.
How will I be taught?
The course is timetabled in a specialist resource area linked to care and health studies including ILT facilities. All staff are highly qualified teachers and have relevant industrial experience in the care/social care sector including nursing, social services, and voluntary services.
What qualification will I get?
BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care
Can I go on to further study?
You can progress to the National Diploma in Health Studies or Caring - with a Merit grade.
What are the career opportunities?
You could go straight into employment as a Care Assistant
