Normal entry requirements for this course are 4 GCSE's at Grade C or above (including English and Maths), but positive consideration will be given to applicants who possess an equivalent qualification.

What are the Course Details?
BTEC First Diploma for ICT Practitioners is a practical, work related course that specialises in Microsoft Office software. The course is designed to encourage learners to use Information and Communication Technology to present and manipulate information. They will acquire knowledge and understanding of the main features of ICT and develop an appreciation of the role played by ICT in society as a whole. Learners will complete projects and assignments that are based on realistic IT situations.


Is the Course for Me?
The course is designed for people who are interested in working within a wide range of computer-related occupations. It is ideal as an introduction for school leavers to a computerised world.


What are the Entry Requirements?
Applications are welcome from learners who have four GCSEs, grade E or above including Maths and English or a related Level 1 qualification. If your literacy or numeracy skills need improvement, you may be encouraged to take a Level 1 programme first.


What will I Learn?
Using ICT to Present Information

This unit enables learners to understand the variety and purpose of different document types and how to present information effectively that takes into account the expected audience and how the document will be used.


Introduction to Computer Systems
This unit gives the learner the basic understanding of computer systems focusing on hardware and software. As part of this, learners will attend a computer maintenance workshop. Learners will find out how a computer works and how people interact with systems.


Website Development
This unit will introduce learners to the internet and enable them to create their own web pages. Learners will gain an understanding of what is involved in website development and be able to create multiple page websites.


Database Software
Learners will gain an understanding of the basic principles of database design and develop practical skills such as creating tables, queries, forms and reports.


Spreadsheet Software
This unit introduces spreadsheets and how they can be used. Learners will be able to create spreadsheets using a range of formulae and functions and present and interpret the data.


ICT Graphics
In this unit learners will gain knowledge of how to use a variety of different software applications to create and modify graphic images to meet a user need. Learners will use a range of tools and techniques and learn how to select, edit and export images.


Software Design & Development
This unit prepares the learner for the creative journey of designing and developing software solutions. The learners will design and produce a software component using programming language, debug, test and document a solution.


How will I Learn?
Sessions are mainly delivered in IT rooms where learners will complete a variety of class activities and assignments.


How will I be Assessed?
All units are assessed through assignment work. Learners will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on the depth and quality of the work produced.


What Enrichments are Available?
Learners are able to select enrichment options that match their timetable at the start of the academic year. A variety of enrichment options exist including many sporting and other activities to enhance your experience of College life.


Are there any Trips or Visits?
Learners who are up to date with assignments are able to attend college-organised trips during Learner Management Weeks.


Is there any Work Experience?
Learners are required to attend work experience for 1 week during the course.


What can I Progress to?
With further training or study, learners can go into careers such as trainee IT support officer or technician.

On successful completion of the BTEC First Diploma learners can progress on to the BTEC National Award for IT Practitioners or other related Level 3 programmes.
