Introduction
The Edexcel BTEC National in Sport is a broad based National Vocational Qualification, which provides a detailed understanding of the Sports Industry. The qualification gives opportunity to begin studying for a range of sports related professions including careers in health and fitness, sports therapy & sports coaching. The course comprises of 18 units that are continually assessed via course work projects. It is vocational in nature combining theoretical and practical units. The BTEC National is equivalent to three A levels.
Course Content
All students take the seven core units:

  • Sports Development

  • Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise

Entry Requirements
Entry onto the programme can be via any of the following:

  • 5 GCSE passes grade â€-C†or above

  • Level 2 qualifaction (Merit grade)

  • Aged 19 over, with a willingness to succeed
All entrants are interviewed prior to entering the course and entry can be gained where applicants demonstrate keenness, the ability to work hard and a willingness to be successful.
Duration
The BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) is a full-time programme lasting for two years.
Assessment
The programme is assessed continuously via coursework in most units. A range of assessment methods are used including practical sports, written reports, work experience and investigations.
There is a strong student-centred approach to the course where all students are encouraged to develop the confidence to learn independently.
Progression
It will enable successful students to move into a career in the sports industry. Upon completion you will be able to make informed choices regarding future employment opportunities such as: provision of individual/group sports activities, health promotion, coaching and community development. As a valid alternative to A levels BTEC Nationals can provide an entry route to Higher Education courses in sports related courses, such as sports development and coaching, leisure management and teacher training.
