BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport (Development Coaching and Fitness) - Level 3 Overview

This course provides an excellent foundation for anyone wishing to enter the sport and fitness industry or progress in to higher education.

This course has been designed to develop your skills in a wide range of areas, ensuring you have the knowledge to confidently coach and advise on a variety of sports related subject areas.

Functional Skills or GCSE in English and maths at an appropriate level will also be studied if you have not attained a GCSE grade C or above. These qualifications are designed to enhance your employment opportunities.

Entry requirements
  • Four GCSEs at grade A*-C (must include Maths or English), or a related BTEC Level 2 diploma at merit level can be used as part of your grades.

?You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.

The table below shows you when the course starts. You may be charged a fee for your course depending on your age and circumstances. If you are aged 24 or over and studying a qualifying Level 3, 4 or 5 course you may be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the costs.

How long is the course?

The subsidiary diploma is a one-year course. After successful completion of this programme, and following advice and guidance, you may continue your study for a further year in order to achieve a full national diploma.

What does the course lead to?

Upon completion you can opt to apply for employment in a wide range of sports-related roles, such as coaching and advisory positions in leisure centres and sports clubs.

What will I study?

You will develop a range of skills through units which will include:

  • Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport
  • The physiology of fitness
  • Exercise health and lifestyle
  • Physical education and the care of young people and children
  • Practical team sport
  • Fitness testing for sport and exercise
  • Assessing risk in sport

The programme of study will include a mandatory work placement which you will be expected to arrange and complete with an industry relevant employer. As part of your studies you will also be expected to participate in work experience, volunteering and fund raising for charities.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
