Course programme

What you need to know
How will I study?

The syllabus is split into four theme areas and includes a pre-released research task. In theme area 1 and theme area 2 you will learn about how businesses work. You will be introduced to the marketing and people functions before investigating entrepreneurs and business start-ups. You will also explore how business finance and operations work, and understand the impact of external influences. Theme area 3 and theme area 4 move from functions to strategy. You will explore influences on business strategy and decision-making, and understand how businesses mitigate risk and uncertainty. You will also explore global business and the opportunities and issues facing businesses in today’s global world.
How will I be taught?

The subject is delivered over 2 sessions per week, one AM and one PM. Students will experience a variety of teaching and learning methods such as group work, presentations, teacher led exposition, research projects, film, televisual and print based media. Watching the news and following businesses is key to success. You should have a real interest in the world around you and bring news stories and current issues to class each week to apply to your studies.
How will I be assessed?

The A-level is formally assessed by three 2 hour exams at the end of the second year. Paper 1 covers themes 1 & 4, paper 2 covers themes 2 & 3 and paper 3 is an unseen exam. You will be assessed at the end of year one to see if you can progress to year two.
