The Course
The BTEC National Certificate in Business is a vocational programme offering an exciting range of Business units. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Unlike many similar qualifications, there are no exams.

Course Content
The Certificate comprises FOUR core units and EIGHT additional units. It can be used to progress to Higher Education or as preparation for employment in any area of business, advertising, marketing, accounting and business management. Four Core Units:
  • Exploring business activity
  • Investigating business resources
  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Effective people, communication and information
Eight Specialist Option Units:
  • Introduction to accounting
  • Investigating recruitment and selection
  • Improving performance in the workplace
  • Exploring team development
  • Managing business information
  • Organisational systems security
  • Understanding Health and Safety in the workplace
  • Starting a small business
You will also study Key Skills at the appropriate level. You will attend classes, tutorials and workshops, along with enrichment activities both internally and externally. These are designed to help you reach your qualification aims. You will have homework assignments and will learn to work on your own initiative and take responsibility for your own learning.
You will learn by extensively using case study material; working in small groups; using IT to prepare professional assignments; taking part in role play and group work; using PowerPoint presentations.
You will develop oral, written and business communication skills.

Assessment/Exams
The scheme of work and assignment programme for each unit is designed by individual specialist teaching staff and is based on Edexcels unit specifications. The student is given the opportunity to produce work that meets Pass, Merit or Distinction criteria.
Students are given feedback on their performance throughout the course so that they can achieve the necessary standards. All work will be assessed internally and externally moderated.

Progression/Career Path
A number of successful students from the course will progress on to Higher Education. Those who choose to continue at Northbrook would be considered for the Foundation Degree in Business. The BTEC National Certificate gives students the opportunity to achieve a good score in UCAS points for university entrance. Successful students who choose not to continue on to Higher Education will enhance their job prospects and the BTEC National will be a stepping stone to professional qualifications.
