BUSINESS BTEC FIRST CERTIFICATE
The BTEC First Certificate is a one year course that is equivalent in value to two GCSEs. It is an excellent base for advanced study, and many of our students choose to follow the BTEC Business National Diploma or Certificate on completion of this course.span>

What and how will I be studying?
The BTEC First Certificate in Business consists of one compulsory unit, and two optional units.

The compulsory unit, Exploring Business Purposes, provides a general introduction to the business world. You will learn about the ownership of businesses, how businesses set targets, and how multinational organisations differ from small local ones. You will also investigate how businesses are classified, and which areas of industry are growing or declining in importance for the UK. Finally, you will learn about the way in which businesses are internally organised, including the role of the various functional areas (such as marketing, human resources, and finance).

What skills will I need and be developing during the course?
The ability to keep well organised and to meet regular deadlines will be essential. Through the activities you will be completing you should develop your communication skills and your ability to work in groups. You will also develop confidence in making presentations and report writing. Your ICT skills will be enhanced as you will make extensive use of software packages and will use the internet for research.

How is the Course assessed?
All units are assessed entirely through coursework. The work you complete will based on evidence from real organisations and the assessments will be varied (including report writing and more practical work such as presentations and group activities).

What career opportunities are there?
On completion of this course you may:

• Choose to proceed to the BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in Business - the majority of students completing this course are likely to follow this route and many will successfully proceed onto degree courses at university.
  
• Choose to enter employment - a number of our past students have gained jobs or enrolled on NVQs.
