This course is for you if you intend to pursue a career in business. This course intends to provide students with an introduction to Business, enabling them to investigate a range of areas of study.

What are the entry requirements?
You will require four GCSE grades D including Maths and English or a GNVQ Foundation Certificate at Distinction Level or equivalent. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills at interview. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction where your suitability for the level and type of course you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 1

  • Reading: You can read and understand the main points and ideas in different types of writing - for example magazine articles, newspaper stories or short stories. You can understand main ideas from a report, read from a website or college text book, etc. You can use what you have read to help you write an essay or make decisions. Writing: You can present information in different ways. You can use grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly. You can present your thoughts and ideas in a clear way that people can understand.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.


What qualification will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you would achieve a OCR National Certificate in Business award which is equivalent to 4 GCSE passes at grade A to C.

Where can it lead?
Successful completion of the OCR National Diploma in Business offers candidates several routes of progression : * Direct entry into employment within business; * Further learning opportunities within employment; * Progression to level 3 of general qualifications within the national framework.

What will I study?
Subjects you will study include: Investigating business, Finance in Business, Enterprise and Operations. You also take three specialist units in addition to Key Skills in ICT, Application of Number and Communication.

How will I be taught?
Study on this course is in the form of theory and practical sessions. Teaching strategies will include lectures, class exercises, work experience, working in groups, research, visits, video, presenting to a group and discussions. You will be required to spend an addition of at least 20 hours on private study.

How will I be assessed?
The course will be assessed through assignments set and marked by your lecturers and externally moderated by the examination board. You will be required to sit externally assessed written tests for Basic Skills and Key Skills units.

You will have access to a personal tutor to help you throughout the course and the College offers a comprehensive range of student services, including learning support, language support and guidance.
