About this course

You will need 2 GCSE's at grade D, including English Language as entry from year 11 at school plus a range of GCSE's at grade E and a satisfactory school report. You will also need to obtain an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure to complete the placement element of the course.

What are the Course Details?
This is a Level 1 modular course leading to a CACHE Foundation Award in Caring for Children. Learners will attend 3 days in college and 2 days in placement throughout the course.

Is the Course for Me?
You should have a caring attitude and an ability to work within a team whilst on placement and in College.

What will I Learn?
As part of the course you will study the following units:
Unit 1 Personal Development
Unit 2 Human Growth and Development
Unit 3 Food and Nutrition
Unit 4 Health and Safety
Unit 5 Care of Children
Unit 6 Play and Practical Activities
Unit 7 Orientation to Work

How will I Learn?
Course delivery consists of taught lessons, group work, practical work assignments and practical experience. Placement experience in a variety of childcare settings will help link theory to practice.

How will I be Assessed?
You will complete practical and written coursework assignments at grades Pass, Merit or Distinction, placement reports and a final multi-choice test paper.

What Enrichments are Available?
A range of enrichment opportunities will be offered alongside this course including Creative Craft, GSCE English, Functional Skills and working with others. Learners will also have access to various other activities within the College including sporting events and organised trips to develop and broaden their experience of College life.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Yes - trips and visits will be organised to various places of interest to enhance the topic you will be studying as part of the course.

Is there any Work Experience?
You will attend placement in a childcare setting two days per week throughout the course. The college will find a suitable placement for you.

What can I Progress to?
On successful completion of the course at Merit/Distinction grade and by achieving GCSE grade C in GSCE English and a Functional Skill, learners may progress onto the Level 2 childcare course or other course within college. You are also required to have a satisfactory reference from your course tutor.
