About this course
You are expected to have a good standard of literacy and communication skills. You are expected to have:- 2 GCSE grades (D or above) in English and another National Curriculum subject or equivalent qualification. Evidence of working at level 1 literacy and E3 or above in Application of Number e.g. GCSE Grade D or equivalent. A suitable reference. A current enhanced CRB check. Successful interview. Mature students may be assessed by initial assessment and interview.

Course Content:
You will be studying English and Maths alongside the childcare units which are the following 5 mandatory units:- An Introduction to working with children; The developing child; Safe, Healthy and Nurturing environment for children; Children and Play; Communication and Professional Skills within Childcare and Education. You will also study one optional unit and one practical unit for 50% of your training, working in a placement with children.
The course will improve your prospects of employment in a wide range of nursery and childcare settings. It is relevant if you are looking to work as a crèche worker, nursery nurse, play group worker, classroom assistant or learning mentor. Assessment will be through assignments, portfolio of work and work experience. You will also need to successfully pass an external multiple choice question paper at the end of your course.
Progression:
Successful students have progressed onto the Diploma in Working with Children and Young People or the BTEC National Diploma Early Years Studies. Others have gone on to study BTEC National in Social Care or NVQs in Childcare.NVQs in Childcare.
