Course programme

Year 1

This evening course features formal teaching sessions and tutorials with practical demonstrations in order to develop and improve the learner s CNC tool setting skills. The units cover the skills and knowledge needed to prove your competences required to carry out turning and milling operations, in accordance with approved procedures, using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, or CNC machining centres. After writing the programs, you will be expected to follow the correct procedures for calling up the operating program, dealing with any error messages and executing the program activities safely and correctly. You will produce a range of components that combine a number of different features, such as parallel, stepped and tapered diameters, drilled and reamed holes, internal and external threads, special forms and profiles. You will be required to operate the CNC machine in line with safe working practices and approved procedures, to monitor continuously the machining operations and, where necessary, make minor adjustments or seek the help of the setter to make the required adjustments, in order to ensure that the work output is to the required quality and accuracy.

Additional information

Assessment will include three practical tasks for each unit (turning and milling) with underpinning knowledge questions used to confirm your knowledge.
