Assessment
There are four grades available: Pass, Merit, Distinction, and Distinction*. The course is assessed completely through coursework.
Teaching styles
A lot of the course is practical and requires you to complete tasks. This will include: working individually or in groups; researching and presenting information; using camera equipment and editing software; and planning and developing creative work. There will also be lots of opportunity for classroom discussion.
Progression
The Extended Certificate is equivalent to 1.5 GCSEs. A pass or above will therefore help you progress onto Level 3 BTEC courses, provided you meet the other entry requirements.
Key features
The course is focused on practical skills and will contribute towards a portfolio of work that might be used as part of your application for a job or further study in a related field. One unit, however, ‘Introducing Media Products and Audiences’, is more research-led and requires greater skills of analysis.
Subject combinations
Other subjects seen as complementing Media include Film, Graphics, Photography, and English. However, it may also fit with IT and Business.
Provisional entry requirements
As part of a level 2 programme, you need a minimum of four grade Ds or 3s at GCSE, or equivalent, including English or English Language.
