About the course

Are you looking for on-the-job training leading to a job as a carpenter, woodworker or joiner in the construction industry? Are you more hands on than academic? Have you ever seen the result of someones DIY at home and thought you could do a better job? The intermediate and advanced Apprenticeships in Wood Occupations at City College Plymouth are a great route to a construction career if you want to combine a job in a local company with on-the-job training. As an intermediate apprentice, youll complete a suite of GCSE level qualifications whilst learning on-the-job and earning a wage with a local company.  You will need to have an eye for detail and good maths skills for measuring and working out angles. Youll also need to be able to follow technical drawings and plans. As an advanced apprentice you will gain valuable experience and occupational competence within your workplace setting. You will be employed and, under supervision, your job would include working in either large building sites, private houses or commercial premises. You will need to achieve a set number of credits from completing mandatory units and a selection of optional units. By the end of your Apprenticeship you will have evidenced competence in the specified range of vocational skills. Youll achieve a suite of qualifications including an NVQ in Wood Occupations, functional skills and a technical certificate in either bench joinery or site carpentry, depending on the pathway you choose. Carpentry is not an easy option – there’s a lot of hard work involved, but this can lead to a rewarding career and a trade you can use for life.
