Carry out first fix flooring and roofing; • Carry out second fixing operations; • Carry out first fix roofing and stairs; • Carry out second fixing double doors and mouldings; • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery.





Completed candidates may wish to seek employment/apprenticeship in this given trade as a Carpenter and Joiner. This has a wide range of opportunities that apprentices can be involved with in a structured career path, such as new builds and refurbishments. Apprentices could be involved in small domestic projects or major projects such as the Olympic Park and Stadium. This qualification will enable progression to:

• NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations; • NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management.

After gaining work experience in the chosen occupational area there are also opportunities to progress into occupational work supervision, management or technical support areas or:

HNC/HND: • Construction and the Built Environment; • Construction; • Construction Management.

Foundation Degree: • Construction and the Built Environment; • Construction Management; • Conservation and Restoration;

or full time employment.




You'll require English Language GCSE Grade 5 (C) or Functional Skill Level 2 and Maths GCSE Grade 5 or Functional Skill Level 2. Having previously completed A Levels or having both Level 1 and 2 Diplomas in Carpentry, Joinery or a related subject would be advantageous. You'll be working or have worked in the industry.

Course programme

It covers the following skills:

• Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery;
• Manufacture shaped doors and frames;
• Manufacture stairs with turns.

The course is delivered both practically and theoretically with practical/theory elements assessed by our highly qualified assessors. A multiple choice examination will also be sat to ascertain the candidates knowledge of the “principles of planning and pricing construction works” relevant to the building industry.

Course Assessment Method

You will be assessed using a range of methods such as:

  • observation of tasks or activities;
  • Examination of work products produced by learners;
  • ‘Question and answer’ end knowledge theory tests covering specific aspects of the knowledge and understanding of carpentry and joinery and its processes;
  • Online examination.

    All of these assessment methods will build a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your subject competence.
