Cello Intermediate Workshop is aimed at those who have completed Level 2 confidently, or who are playing at around Grade 3 standard. You will develop your technique and musicianship on the cello, learning in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

About this course

- Play technical work at Grade 4/5 standard
- Use vibrato appropriately to control and vary your tone quality
- Play with sensitivity to musical style in a range of cello repertoire
- Improve your playing posture
- Improve your tone production and use of dynamics
- Be able to play in left hand positions up to 6th, and in thumb position
- Play solo and in ensemble with more confidence.

Please bring your cello, a pencil, rosin and spare strings.
The tutor will provide handouts of musical material, which you will need to bring to each class.

- Scales, arpeggios and other technical work
- Shifting and position work, up to thumb position
- Clef work, using bass, tenor and treble
- Vibrato
- Solo and group playing in solo and ensemble repertoire
- Tone production and variety of tone
- Developing artistry with the bow, with a focus on legato, staccato and portato
- Relaxed and efficient posture.

You will be taught in a group through playing technical work, studies and solo and ensemble repertoire. The tutor will teach through demonstration and explanation. There will be opportunities for short solo 'master class' type work with individual students within the context of the group. You will be expected to practise for around 30 minutes a day outside class. There will be opportunities for informal or formal performances.

You may continue with this course for as many terms as you wish until you are ready to move onto Cello: advanced workshop. Your tutor will advise.
