This ceramics portfolio course combines the tuition of ceramics and drawing techniques, alongside an encouragement to develop personal ideas. This will enable you to build up a diverse body of work to apply for further education. Working on set projects, you learn a broad variety of 2D and 3D techniques which encourage the development of personal thought and expression. The work will be exhibited at the end of the course.

Basic materials are provided. 2D and 3D materials may be required at different stages of the course. Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. Your tutor will advise you which tools to purchase. There is a charge for porcelain which is £17.50 per bag/ £8.75 per half bag. Ensure that you bring with you a suitable pair of closed shoes, e.g. not open toed sandals.
You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow health and safety guidelines.
You will be taught by demonstrations, group discussions and informal friendly critiques, one to one tuition, visual information, handouts and slide shows.

Course programme
Projects in 2D and 3D are divided as follows: in term one and two the ceramics classes are taught on Wednesdays and drawing is taught on Thursdays. Students will be making work to fulfil project briefs.
In ceramics classes, clay, glaze research, hand-building, mould making, throwing and firing processes and techniques are taught and used to complete the projects. Some written research will be undertaken to underpin the
practical studies. 2d studies with be integrated into ceramic projects where appropriate.
During the drawing days students are introduced to a wide range of projects that explore drawing through different
techniques, materials and concepts. This includes collage, painting, book-making, observational and life drawing.
Drawing will be looked at both as an art form and as an ally to other creative practices.
