Ceramics - A Structured Introduction


Who is this course for?
Beginners who wish to develop basic throwing and handbuilding skills.

What previous knowledge/experience are required?
Some experience would be beneficial, but beginners are welcome and will be taught the basics from scratch. More experienced students will be able to work at their own level.

What is the level of the course?
The course covers all levels. You will be assessed at the start of the course and, depending on previous experience, be given projects at an appropriate level.

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
Basic ceramic handbuilding and decorating techniques and researching ideas and techniques around these themes. Learning outcomes (you will be able to) : - Demonstrate basic principles of ceramics in working with plastic clay, such as stages of drying and readiness for bisque firing. - Prepare and use tools and equipment for ceramic processes, such as kneading clay and rolling out slabs. - Demonstrate ceramic construction techniques, such as basic clay to clay joining, to produce a ceramic object. - Demonstrate the physical properties of ceramic materials to create surfaces, volumes and structures. - Use tools and equipment selectively, to produce a variety of surfaces and 3 Dimensional structures. - Select and apply Ceramic processes to produce 3D objects / test pieces using a range of construction methods. - Plan a ceramic project, clearly demonstrating principles of ceramics practice such as stages and sequence of actions. - Critically reflect on and adapt the plan where necessary. - Use tools, equipment and materials selectively and experimentally to convey the nuances and subtleties implicit in ceramic technology in a self-defined project leading to the production of a ceramic object. - Select and explore techniques and processes to resolve a self-initiated ceramic project.

What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
One to one suport from tutor; weekly group discussion and critique, portfolio building.

How will we assess your progress on the course?
Through portfolio reviews and seminars.

What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
Working Men's College Certificate of Achievement.

What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
You will be encouraged to visit galleries and take part in outside exhibitions and competitions.

What can I do after completing this course?
On completing the course, students may wish to progress onto the next term's course or students can progress onto the Access Art and Design couse and further art courses that are available at the Working Men's College.

Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course)
Most materials and equipment are provided but you will need basic drawing equipment, small sketchbook and notepad and paintbrushes. (You will be advised as to what to get). If you would like to take your work home there is a charge per weight for clay at £1,50 per pound.
