What is the Certificate in Counselling Skills & Theory course?
This course aims to improve candidates†counselling skills, for those working in a counselling role, whilst providing an introduction to essential counselling theory. It also aims to provide a safe environment for personal development and raise awareness of professional issues in the use of counselling skills.

The course is particularly suited to those who have embarked on a career in counselling, or are seeking to enhance the use of counselling skills e.g. Nurses, Social Workers.

It would be useful if you have already gained the Counselling Skills Level 2 certificate or have interpersonal skills experience. This course is aimed at those wishing to consolidate their skills and knowledge, or those who are undergoing a change in career direction and are wishing to pursue a career which involves counselling.

NB An interview is required before you can enrol on this course.

Course topics
Will enable candidates to:
  • Acquire, practice and develop counselling skills
  • Understand essential counselling theory
  • Understand professional issues
  • Develop self
  • Understand the contextual framework for counselling practice
Teaching and Learning
The course is participative and experiential. You will take part in group discussions, small group work and role-play. The sessions are not in formal lecture style.

You will be expected to complete some written work outside the classroom and you should allocate between two and three hours a week for this.

Assessment details
Assessments will be by observation of your practical skills and recording your experiences in writing, creating a portfolio of evidence including a candidate journal and records of skills practice. There will also be an assignment, set and externally marked by the NCFE.

This is a Learning & Skills Council (LSC) funded course and you may be exempt from the tuition fee, however you would be required to pay the registration fee at the time of application. Tuition fees for overseas students may vary from those quoted.
