Certificate in Education (Teacher Training) - Level 5 Overview

This is a two-year part-time course in association with the University of Derby, intended for full and part-time teachers and trainers in the lifelong learning sector. This qualification is a requirement for gaining the Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

Please note that the qualification gained at the end of this programme is for teachers in the lifelong learning sector; it is not a qualification for the school sector.

This programme is validated by the University of Derby.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to attend an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and other related issues.

To start this course you will normally be expected to have:

  • A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in the area you wish to teach.
  • GCSE English language and maths at grade C or above: English and maths at Level 2 are essential requirements to complete the course.
  • To have a confirmed teaching commitment of at least 50 hours per year, as this is an in-service course.

Please note: You may start this course without maths at Level 2, but must complete this prior to progressing to the second year of study. You will not be able to start the course without English at Level 2.

Also, please note that GCSE maths or equivalent is required for progression onto the BA (Hons) Education Studies (top-up) award or other programme.

Provisional timetables will be discussed at interview, and confirmed in the final joining instructions which all students will receive in July.

This is a two-year part-time course requiring attendance one evening per week during the first year. Second year timetable will be confirmed with the cohort.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and may include portfolio/teaching file, academic posters, essays, reports, observations and a reflective journal.

  • Preparing to Teach Plus (FE and Skills Sector)
  • Developing Practical Teaching Skills
  • The Theory of Teaching and Learning
  • Curriculum Development for Inclusive Practice
  • Behaviour Management for Learning
  • The Teaching Professional

Module titles may change.

What can I go on to study?
  • Upon successful completion of the course, you may choose to apply for a foundation degree or full honours degree, such as the BA (Hons) Education Studies subject to entry requirements. You may also wish to study a relevant subject at another institution, subject to entry requirements
  • Alternatively, you may seek employment in a wide variety of teaching or training roles within the public, private or voluntary sector.
