What are the Course Details?
This course is aimed at those wanting to get practical experience and a basic understanding of small animal care. You will learn how to set up and maintain a wide range of animal accommodation; how to correctly feed and water a variety of domestic species and the importance of hygiene and health care when keeping animals. You will also learn about correct animal handling and safety issues. Assessment will be through practical observations and a portfolio of work. There is also an online end test.

What will I Learn?
You will be taught the correct procedures of animal husbandry and also about Health & Safety in the work place, team building and personal development.
This award provides basic theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the following units:
Compulsory units:
  • Safe and Effective Working Practices
  • Develop Performance in Land-Based Industries
  • Introduction to Animal Species

Plus 4 optional units chosen from the following:
  • Industrial Experience in Land-Based Industries
  • Assist with Maintaining the Health and Wellbeing of Animals
  • Assist with the Feeding and Watering of Animals
  • Assist with the Preparation and Maintenance of Animal Accommodation
  • Assist with the Handling and Restraint of Animals
  • Assist with the Exercise of Animals


How will I Learn?
The course is divided between classroom based theory work and practical work in the College's Animal Care Centre.

How will I be Assessed?
Assessment is by three means:
  • A multiple choice test carried out online
  • Unit assignment
  • The assembly of a portfolio of evidence that would ideally include a period of work experience.


What Enrichments are Available?
The College offers a wide variety of enrichment activities such as Job Club and learning to play golf and paintballing. You will be encouraged to take part in enrichments to ensure you get the most of your time at College.


Are there any Trips or Visits?
In previous years learners have had the opportunity to visit Crufts, the Lincolnshire show and to discover the work done by Yorkshire Police Dogs. Learners will also have the opportunity to visit local kennels, pet shops and veterinary surgeries.

Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience does not form a compulsory element of this course. However, learners will take part in regular practical unit duties in our purpose built Animal Care Centre.

What can I Progress to?
Successful completion of this course gives you the opportunity to progress onto the BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care. The 0360 qualification counts towards the underpinning knowledge for this course.

Previous learners generally progressed onto higher level courses before looking to gain employment in the industry.
