The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has an approved direct entry examination route open to certain categories of applicant. These applicants are given initial assessment of status by MCA before being directed onto this route. Only those candidates directed by the MCA will be allowed entry onto this route and therefore all prospective candidates should contact the MCA main office in Southampton in the first instance.

Course content:
This Engineer Officer of the Watch qualification was formally known as Class 4. This is a four day Engineering Knowledge only short course which can make up one of the required elements for the Engineer Officer of the Watch course.
There are a number of elements which may be required for candidates taking this route and the exact combination will be indicated on an individual basis by MCA to each candidate.
The elements are:
  • Completion of the four STCW 95 Basic Safety Courses
  • Completion of sea time as directed by MCA (Usually 6 - 30 months depending on background)
  • Completion of MNTB Training Record Book (This is the 'purple' book and is not the same as the MNTB NVQ Portfolio - the 'red' book).
  • A one week engineering knowledge examination preparation course (optional)
  • EOOW engineering knowledge written examination
  • Completion of the MNTB Workshop Skills Programme (Operational Level)
  • Completion of the three STCW 95 Advanced course MCA EOOW Oral Examination
  • Completion of the IAMI written papers for Science A and Science B


Course structure:
The examination preparation courses and written examinations are scheduled 5 times per year and there are no limitations on candidate numbers.
MNTB Workshop Skills Training, which is competence based, is usually available at any time on an infil basis.
