Assessment procedure:
The current method of assessment is by external examination prepared by SQA on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.
Certificates are issued for passes in a combination of professional subject passes ie General/Motor and/or Steam.
Upon passing the required assessment and an

MCA Oral Examination* the candidate will be awarded the Certificate of Competency.
Written examination papers are of three hours duration.

*Please note: All candidates must be in possession of an MCA Notice of Eligibility to apply for an oral examination.
