Teeline Shorthand
Teeline Shorthand is a nationally recognised shorthand system and offers its own external examinations.

This course is aimed at people who wish to learn shorthand for employment purposes or for taking notes in lectures. The course is an add-on to students' academic studies for those who wish to gain an extra skill.

What Will I Learn On This Course?

Students will be able to read and write the following:

· Letter Outlines
· Common Word Forms and Special Outlines
· Blends, Word Groupings, Word Endings and Word Beginnings
· Writing speed of at least 40 wpm.

Course Content And Method Of Assessment

The course is for one year, 2 lessons a week, and initially introduces the outlines, common forms and word groupings of the Teeline writing system. As the course progresses, students will learn how to condense these outlines into even shorter forms and, as Teeline is a user-friendly system, adequate speeds are easily attained. One can aim to achieve speeds of up to 60 wpm by the end of the year.

Lessons will be mainly teacher-centred with some groupwork using the Teeline Gold text book. Assessment of work will be based on dictation and transcription exercises and unit tests. Homework will be kept to a minimum but it is advisable to do exercises in-between lessons to reinforce theory, and listen to audio material to develop one's writing speed.

After The Course

Students will be able to take notes and transcribe them back quickly, in any given situation, whether it be in university lectures or in employment.

Subject Combinations

Shorthand combines effectively with all subjects where notetaking is required. It is especially useful to those students who are taking Media and wish to follow a career in journalism or wish to work in a secretarial/business environment.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required although a C in GCSE English Language would be preferable.
