Summary:

This course is for learners who wish to explore their interest in the hairdressing and beauty sector. It will help them gain insights into the industry and to learn useful basic skills and background knowledge.

This is an introductory programme, however, so it should be understood from the outset that successful completion of the award does not imply a level of competence.

Course Length:
Two years, with a possibility of progressing to Hairdressing NVQ Level 1 in the second year.
Course Schedule:
One day Day Release from school as agreed (for 14-16s)
Entry Requirements:

This is a day release course for 14-16 year olds who are still at school. Entry is by interview selection.

Core Skills:
The areas covered in this programme are health and safety, salon reception duties, finding out about customer service, shampooing and conditioning hair, assisting with perming and colouring services, personal presentation, applying basic make-up, providing basic manicure and preparing and maintaining work areas.

Assessment:
Assessment for this award consists of:
  • a written assignment for each unit
  • a practical assessment for each unit
  • a multiple choice online test covering the background knowledge for the five mandatory 'generic' units

Academic Progression:
After successfully completing the programme you may be able to progress to our NVQ Level 1 or Level 2 programmes, providing there is evidence at interview of the industry requirement for a dress code and of work experience.

Career Progression:
This course will give you a good preparation for junior work in a hairdressing salon.

Full Description:
A uniform will be provided, along with the text book relevant to the award; 'The Official Guide to the City and Guilds Certificate in Salon Services' by John Armstrong.

You should provide stationery items such as paper, pens, a lever arch file with dividers and plastic pockets to store and present your work.
