About this course

• Hold your own part in a small group with some confidence
• Play in tune and in time with others in a small group
• Understand how your own part fits into the musical ensemble
• Co-operate with others in a small group to identify problems and find solutions
• Respond positively to musical critique and suggestions from your tutor and peers
• Perform in a small group with some confidence.

Please bring your instrument, a pencil and eraser. The tutor will provide or recommend suitable music for the varous ensembles within the class, but you are also welcome to bring along music you are interested in playing.

Ensemble skills:
Understanding how the parts fit together into a musical ensemble
listening and playing in time with others
balance and blend in a small ensemble
practice and rehearsal skills.

• Tutor explanation and demonstration • Playing with a variety of other instrumentalists in groups of 2 or more • Receiving coaching within your groups • Listening to and critiquing other groups.

Additional information

You may continue in this course for as many terms as you wish; there will be different repertoire each term. City Lit also offers courses for many instruments at levels from grade 3 upwards, where you can study solo technique and repertoire (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Violin/Viola, Cello, Piano). You may also be interested in String ensemble or Clarinet choir When you are ready (your tutor will advise), you may wish to progress to one of City Lit's more advanced Ensembles./ You may also be interested in Music appreciation courses.
