Music Theory - Introduction
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for anyone who wishes to learn about the basic elements of music and musical notation. It is a very useful preparation for all kinds of music students. Those who attend the Singing, Blues, Harmonica and Drums and Percussion and Music technology classes will find it a useful complement to their learning, whilie those engaged in private study of any instrument will find that it will help demystify the language of music.
What previous knowledge/experience are required?
No prior experience is required although knowledge or experience of music in some form is useful. This could be playing any instrument, playing in a group, singing in a choir or in the bathroom.
What is the level of the course?
This is a Level 1 (beginners course).
What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
The course covers basic an introduction to rhythm, harmony, and melody. Note values, time signatures, musical symbols, Construction of the major scale, scales and key signatures of the major keys of C, G, D and F, Bass Clef and Treble Clef will all be included in this class. Learning outcomes including what the student will be able to do:
- Know note values
- Know simple time signatures
- Know the stave : treble and bass clefs
- Know some frequently used terms and signs
- Know the construction of the major scale
- Know the construction of the harmonic/melodic minor scale
- Know the scales and key signatures of some major and minor keys
Lectures, written and practical exercises, video and audio recordings, internet.
How will we assess your progress on the course?
There will be continuous assessment through exercises set by the tutor.

Working Men's College certificate
What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
Students are expected to read recommended reading materials outside of class time.
What can I do after completing this course?
Students can progress to the Music Theory - Lower intermediate class where they can study up to ABRSM Grade 4
Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course)
You will need manuscript paper, a notebook, pen, pencil and rubber. It is also useful if you have access to some kind of piano keyboard, acoustic or electric. There are also set books that cover the requirements for the ABRSM grades.
Are there any other requirements?
You are required to attend every lesson on time.
