About this course

As part of an advanced level programme, a minimum of 5 G.C.S.E.s at grade C or above (or the equivalent) including a minimum of grade C in Maths and grade C in English. A grade C or above in GCSE Chemistry or at least B/C in GCSE Core and Additional Science is essential. (GCSE Additional Applied Science is not suitable for this course).

Chemistry AS and A2

INTRODUCTION
Chemistry is acknowledged to be the central science and is studied not only by students taking biology, mathematics and physics, but also by those taking a broader range of subjects, such as geography, psychology, computing and modern languages.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will develop essential knowledge and understanding of the concepts of chemistry and the skills needed for the use of these in new and changing situations.

AS CONTENT
3 Modules

1. Foundation Chemistry
2. Chemistry in Action
3. Investigative & Practical Skills

AS ASSESSMENT
1 hour 15 minutes test on Module 1 in January 1 hour 45 minutes test on Module 2 in June Investigative & Practical Skills : internally assessed

A2 CONTENT
4. Kinetics, Equilibria & Organic Chemistry
5. Energetics, Redox & Inorganic Chemistry
6. Investigative & Practical Skills

A2 ASSESSMENT
1 hour 45 minutes test on Module 4 in January 1 hour 45 minutes test on Module 5 in June Investigative & Practical Skills: internally assessed Total coursework percentage is 20%

HOW WILL I STUDY?
Lessons will include: note-taking class, discussion, practical work, individual tutorials, past papers and developing key skills. It is recommended that you spend the same number of hours on homework as you do in the class. That means five hours per week. Trips to industry and revision conferences are organised on a regular basis.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

A grade C or above in GCSE Chemistry or at least B/C in GCSE Core and Additional Science is essential. (GCSE Additional Applied Science is not suitable for this course).

LENGTH OF COURSE
A three-week intensive bridging programme to help with the transition to AS Chemistry will be run at the start of the course. You will be expected to pass this. AS level is one year, followed by a second year for those progressing to A2 level.

WHERE NEXT?
Most students taking A-level chemistry go onto university courses ranging from accountancy to zoology with chemistry being essential for medicine, pharmacy and many other courses.
