Building upon your GCSE Science, your understanding of quantitative chemistry, structures and patterns of reactions will be developed during the AS course, whilst in the second year more challenging areas of the subject will be considered. Excellent laboratories, computer facilities and equipment will enable you to become proficient at qualitative and quantitative analysis and you will learn to synthesise organic chemicals. You will be encouraged to use data-logging techniques and computer simulations to follow chemical reactions.
Recently visits to Royal Society Lectures in London have taken place during the AS year as well as research projects and problem solving competitions.
ENTRY RECOMMENDATIONS:
BB in Science and Additional Science or grade B in Chemistry, grade B in Maths.
ASSESSMENT:
Written and practical exams in both years. There is no coursework element.
PROGRESSION:
Chemistry is a necessary subject for medical, veterinary and dentistry courses.
Most biological and environmental courses also require a sound grounding in Chemistry.
Chemistry is a highly regarded subject for many other degree courses as it encompasses a wide range of skills as well as developing imaginative, logical and critical thinking.
