Do you believe in giving children the right start in life? Are you passionate about providing safe, engaging and stimulating education and care to young children? Are you motivated to study in order to progress to a leadership role or teaching within early years? As a student on our Early Childhood Foundation Degree, you will start by focussing on the skills needed to develop as reflective childcare practitioners. You will then study how children develop and learn, the early years curriculum and child protection among other subjects.
The programme is taught over two years full time or three years part time. Each academic year consists of two semesters, these run from the middle of September until the end of January and, from the beginning of February until the end of May. Full time students attend two days each week and part time students attend for one half day plus tutorials. There are taught lectures, seminars and workshops as well as set tasks and activities that are to be carried out in the workplace. In each semester attendance at a Saturday conference at the University of Worcester is a mandatory requirement. If choosing to attend Stourbridge college, please be aware this course is run at Kidderminster Academy.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS UCAS Tariff Points: Pre-2017 Entry - 140 points, Post-2017 Entry - 56 points The tariff points can be made up of: A Levels (GCE and VCE): 1 A Level at Grade C and 1 A Level at Grade D BTEC Extended Diploma: Grade MPP BTEC Diploma: Grade MM BTEC 90 Credit Diploma: Grade DM Access to HE: Grade P45 Minimum number of GCSEs at Grade C or above: 5 which must include: GCSE English: Grade C or 4 (desirable) GCSE Maths: Grade C or 4 (desirable) Are Level 2 equivalents accepted?: Yes (desirable) which includes a University of Worcester Literacy Test at a cost to be confirmed. If you do not have the required English entry qualification you will be asked to complete a non-standard entry essay question. NON-ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS DBS Clearance Placement Hours

Delivery and Assessment

You will be assessed by module assignments at the end of each semester, for example written assignments, poster presentations and podcasts.

Progression

Those graduating from the degree programme may apply to study an Honours degree in Early Childhood Studies, from which it is possible to apply for a PGCE providing you have have maths, English and science at GCSE Grade C or above. The foundation degree is also a route to the Initial Early Years Teacher Programme (maths, English and science GCSE at C or above is also a requirement). In other areas other than education it is a suitable base for a range of careers in social work, children’s charities, nurseries, schools and health services.
