About this course

You must be aged 19 or over and working with children/young people, as a Nursery Assistant, Crèche Worker, Special Needs Assistant or similar, working under supervision in a childcare/school setting. Students will need to comply with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) vetting procedures for those working with children and young people (as required by Law).

This programme is designed to meet the needs of employed practitioners who are currently working with children/young people from age 0 to 16 years (and their families). The Level 2 (Intermediate) qualification is appropriate for people who are increasing their knowledge and understanding of this area of work and the diverse roles within a Children and Young Peoples` environment.

Course Content:
This NVQ Level 2 is a 7 unit qualification comprising 6 core (mandatory) units and 1 optional unit.

Core units include:

  • Contribute to positive relationships.
  • Help to keep children/young people safe.
  • Support children/young people.
  • Use support to develop own practice in Children`s Care Learning & Development.
  • Prepare and maintain the environment to meet the needs of children/young people.
  • Support children/young peoples play and learning.


The training sessions include several learning approaches and styles including group work, case studies, role play, discussions, workshops and the use of ICT resources. Knowledge evidence is built up in a portfolio which will support the direct observations made by your Assessor.

Candidates are encouraged to attend College weekly to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to achieve the award.

Assessment:
You will be allocated a peripatetic assessor who will visit the work-place every 4 weeks to carry out direct observations, look at the evidence produced and offer advice and mentoring to meet the NVQ standards. Principles and values are an important foundation for good practice, these are embedded throughout the national standards. Each candidate must demonstrate to their Assessor that they work within the context of these principles and values at all times.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to:

  • NVQ Level 3 Children`s Care, Learning & Development.
  • NVQ Level 3 Teaching Assistant.


Costs
: This course is subsidised by the Lancashire Education Authority (LEA). Tuition fees will therefore be substantially reduced (to £50) for Lancashire residents/employees.

How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
