Complementary therapies are used to support the treatment of more than 12 million adults in the UK each year. The potential economic benefits of complementary therapies are also attracting large pharmaceutical companies such as GlaxoSmithKline. The 2015 Nobel Prize was awarded to Professor You You Tu who found the active compound from a Chinese herbal medicine Artemisia to treat malaria. Our degree, taught by leading practitioners in the field, offers some of the best training facilities in the UK.

· What are the objectives of this course?

A unique training programme in the UK, the course is aimed at existing practitioners and acupuncture or Traditional Chinese Medicine graduates, who understand the importance of continuous professional development and specialisation in their practice. We are currently developing an exciting new medicinal herb garden, which will be a fantastic vehicle for interactive learning. Containing more than 200 species of medicinal plants, the facility will amount to a living reference library.

Course programme

The MSc programme which includes completion of a dissertation will take one calendar year to complete. Students can choose to exit with a Postgraduate Certificate after successfully completing a 60 credit module in Professional Practice or a Postgraduate Diploma after successfully completing 120 credits (Professional Practice, Advanced Classical Texts and Research Methods). Both the PGCert and the PGDip can be completed over two semesters (one academic year).

Taking into account each individual's previous training and professional knowledge, we tailor your study to best suit your needs. The duration of training can vary for each individual, as we might offer exemptions from some aspects of study on the basis of previous learning.

Clinical training takes place in our clinic on campus and via external placements that happen throughout the course, ensuring you put theory into practice in a professional environment.
