Brief Description of the Course:

(NB. All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 1,2,3,4,5,6 or 7 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification)

The Level 1 Diploma provides an introduction into agriculture, with a focus on the care, health and management of livestock. The aim of the course is to develop the basic practical skills that are required on a farm this will be done through a series of practical and written assessments.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following qualifications are needed:

Students need to be aged over 16 and interested in the subject, with some practical knowledge of agriculture desirable. Academic qualifications are not essential, but some level of ability in Maths and English is important and a keen interest in the subject.

List of Units:

¨ Assist with the care of animals

¨ Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals

¨ Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals

¨ Carry out tractor operations

¨ Develop performance in land-based industries

¨ Introduction to crop systems

¨ Safe and effective working practices in land-based industries

¨ Use transport and assist with maintenance of tools and equipment

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments and practical work. There will also be an online test.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Assistant farm-workers.

Progression:

On successful completion of this course the student may progress onto a Level 2 course at College, a Level 2 apprenticeship or enter the industry.

Special Requirements:

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment: Steel toe-capped boots/wellington boots. Protective overalls, waterproof coat and leggings, hi visibility vest and work gloves.
