Brief Description of the Course:

(NB. All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification)

This is a broad based course which covers areas including tree climbing, tree identification, machine/tool maintenance, business operations as well as an introduction to legislation affecting the industry.

This course provides you with a comprehensive introduction to arboriculture. It is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine a practical based training programme with sound theoretical knowledge. The course is designed to give you a broad understanding of arboriculture, with a view to progressing to one of our Level 3 Diploma courses, or to start work in the industry.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following qualifications are needed:

  • a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English Language
  • or equivalent qualifications.

List of Units:

  • Carry out Ground-based Arboricultural Operations

  • Environmental and Land-Based Business

  • Introduction to Land-based Machinery Operations (Preston)

  • Participate in Providing Estate Maintenance (Liverpool)

  • Identify and Select Trees and Shrubs

  • Undertake Work-Related Experience in the Land-based Industries

  • Undertake Tree Climbing and Pruning Operations

  • Disposal of Wood Arisings and Residues from Work on Trees

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments and practical work.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

There is a range of progression opportunities which include employment in the industry as a grounds person/climber (often linked with the placement from the Work Related Experience module), NVQ work based learning apprenticeship as well as progression on to the Level 3 Diploma Arboriculture or similar.

Progression:

The vast majority of students usually progress onto the Level 3 City and Guilds Diploma courses if they gain sufficient merits on the Level 2 Diploma.

¨ NPTC - CS 38 – Climb Trees and Perform Aerial Rescue

¨ NPTC - Manually Fed Wood Chipper Operations

Industrial / Work Experience:

There is an opportunity to gain work related experience both at college during practical sessions and possibly through local companies and organisations. This is usually 1 day per week and evidence of this experience contributes to your final qualification.

Liverpool - Arboriculture students play an active role in maintaining the woodlands within Croxteth Country Park.

Special Requirements:

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment:

Steel toe capped boots with good grip and ankle support is essential. Please refer to the website for a full list.
